Soap Dish 101

So you’ve decided to make the switch to soap bars, shampoo bars, and/or conditioner bars – sweet! Now you may be wondering how best to store your solid bars so that you can get the most possible use out of them. The answer: a soap dish.

Soap dishes help prolong the life of solid bars, and come in many different forms. We offer both a  wooden soap dish and a  silicone soap dish option. Read on for all the basics about soap dishes and how to use them.

What are soap dishes?

Soap dishes lift soap bars off of bare countertops, and shower and bathtub ledges. They allow the bars to dry after each use. Soap dishes usually have ridges or slats to drain excess water and prevent sogginess, extending the life of soap bars. Soap dishes also keep counters and ledges clean and clear of any residue from products.

How to use soap dishes

After your various sudsy activities, simply rest a soap bar or hair care bar on top of the dish and let the soap dish work its magic to drain excess water! Soap dishes can be used with many Earthling products, including shampoo bars, conditioner bars, soap bars, facial soap bars, and solid dish soap refills. Here are a few size references:

  • The silicone soap dish can fit one set of shampoo and conditioner bars; one full size bar soap; one facial soap bar; or one dish soap.
  • If you’re looking for a larger soap dish to display a full collection of low-waste body care, look no further than our  8” wooden soap dish! This dish can be used in the shower, sink area, or kitchen, and can fit: two sets of shampoo and conditioner bars; one full size bar soap and one set of shampoo and conditioner bars; and many other combos.

To care for your dish, periodically wipe it clean with a wet cloth and allow it to air dry before putting it back in rotation. In general, we’ve found that our wooden soap dish can be used for two weeks before cleaning. If you have a backup soap dish, you can use it for two weeks, then swap again! This rotation can help prevent mold and also extends the life of the wooden soap dish.

Which soap dish is right for you?

We carry three soap dish variations so you can find the best soap dish for your needs.

  • If you share a bathroom with another person, we recommend using two separate 4” wooden dishes for your solid hair care or one single 8” wooden dish to store two sets of shampoo and conditioner bars. Your bathroom will look neat and organized with the help of just a few soap dishes!
